Chicken Bog Recipe

Chicken bog is a traditional South Carolina dish made with chicken, rice, and spices. Here’s a recipe to make it at home:

Ingredients:

  • 1 whole chicken, cut into pieces
  • 2 cups white rice
  • 6 cups water or chicken broth
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/4 cup chopped parsley or herbs of choice
  • 1/4 cup chopped scallions
  • 1/4 cup butter

Directions:

  1. In a large pot, bring the chicken and water (or chicken broth) to a boil. Reduce heat and let it simmer until the chicken is cooked through, about 30-45 minutes.
  2. Remove the chicken from the pot and let it cool. Remove the skin and bones, and shred the meat.
  3. In the same pot, add the rice, onion, bell pepper, garlic, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let it simmer, covered, for about 20 minutes.
  4. Add the shredded chicken to the pot, along with the parsley, scallions, and butter. Stir well to combine and let it simmer for another 10 minutes.
  5. Serve hot and enjoy your delicious chicken bog!

Note: You can adjust the seasoning according to your taste preferences. Some people like to add smoked sausage or bacon to their chicken bog for added flavor.
